A Natural Way to Good Health

Chinese herbal therapy

In China, Natural herbs are used widely for various medical conditions, these herbal medications along with acupuncture formed the base of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is over 4000 years of history. These herbs are composed of roots, barks, flowers, seeds, fruits, leaves, and branches. In China, there are over 3000 herbs are used for medical purposes, in which only 300-500 are commonly used. It is crucial to use the herbs grown in their native environments (certain areas of China) rather than outside due to their mineral source uptake and other factors during the maturation which affects their medical valuability. The right herb from the right source is essential for the maximum benefit of the patients.

Chinese Herbal therapy or herb medicine are used for three main purposes:
treating the acute diseases and conditions,( anti-bacterial, anti-viral, etc), the chronic illness,(eg:gastrointestinal disorder, respiratory disorder, allergies, immune system deficiency, etc.), strengthening the body for faster recovery, maintaining the wellbeing by keeping the body Yin-Yan balance.(also for western medication side-effect reduction.)

The principle underlies various symptom treatments of Western Chemical medication (conventional Western medicine) and Chinese Herbal therapy is completely different, the former one targets the specific receptor on the surface of cells or enzymes in the body system in order for the medication to work, and due to various reasons, (eg: the drug is not purely an agonist or antagonist for the target receptor, or due to various location of this particular type of receptors in the body etc…) the side-effects are noticeable and sometimes unbearable. The later one aims at body system balance.

Comparing with Western chemical medicine, Chinese herbal medicine is much more gentle and safer because it is made of natural herbs and there are no side-effects. And its beneficial effect has been practiced on man rather than in the lab. Its maximum beneficial effects may be achieved over a long time, and due to genetic variation etc, the time taken for onset of the beneficial effect of Chinese herbal medication in each individual varies. Most of Chinese herbs do not cause side effects on their own, even some side effects that do occur among a few herbs, those side effects can be easily counteracted with other herbs in the prescription. These counteractions were summarized by Chinese over thousands of years. For these reasons, people choose herbal therapy and rely on Chinese herb medicine, and in western country, due to the fast onset of beneficial effect of Western chemical medication, Chinese Herbal therapy were seen as an efficacious alternative after the failure of Western medication. Especially for those who are looking for a natural way of combating the chronic illness than taking a number of western conventional medicine daily.

There are many Chinese herbal patent medicines and prescribed herb formulas for treating chronic illness. Most patients found the effectiveness over time, and with some are satisfied with the overall non-side-effect well-treated conditions, and some are not only satisfied with the treatment for their illness but also surprised with their general health improvement.

Chinese herbs can be taken to reduce the side effects of other medication such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, etc and its effectiveness were proved with clinical data. It is well known that antibiotics weakens the immune system of man, on the contrary, Herbal therapy can strengthen it. Also, during chemotherapy, the number of white blood cell drops, causes fatigue, lack of energy and appetite.

Chinese Patent herbs are premixed herb combinations according to the traditional formulas developed by experts in traditional Chinese medicine through over 3000 years. They are similar to over-the-counter-drugs in the UK and usually in the form of pill, capsule and liquid. The advantages of Chinese patent herbs are convenient, easy to take, less expensive. However, patient's symptoms must fit the patent herb's narrow indications.

Prescribed herbs are mixed by a Chinese Medicine practitioner according to an individual patient's symptoms and diagnoses. In general speaking, prescribed herbs are more effective than patent herbs because the prescribed herbs are tailored to your symptoms and conditions. In our clinic, all of the Chinese Medicine practitioners are well qualified.
